A cost-effective combined advanced therapy to treat knee osteoarthritis

SINPAIN Progress Meeting in Porto

On 22-23 May 2025, the SINPAIN consortium held its bi-annual Progress Meeting in Porto, Portugal, hosted by the team of i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde.

We have just completed the third year of the project’s duration and are entering the final stretch.

The issues that need to be tackled from a technical point of view remain challenging but we are starting to minimize loose ends. Testing of the advanced nanotherapeutics showed most promising results reducing inflammation and pain signals with lipid nanoparticles. In a next step, these results would need to be verified by the experiments that have just started at Saarland University. Another issue that was thoroughly discussed related to identifying the best mechanical properties of the hydrogel to be used in the OA bioreactor model. A milestone to be achieved by the end of this year will be the compilation of the briefing document to be submitted to the Innovation Task Force (ITF). For this purpose, ASPHALION is in close contact with the consortium partners.

Slowly moving towards the end of SINPAIN, we also started to intensify our discussions about the Key Exploitable Results (KERs) produced in the project. In this regard, EURICE held a workshop where KER leaders presented their results and indicated the innovation potential.

A visit to the labs of the Neuro Skeletal Circuits Group (NeSk) and a nice networking dinner with a view above Porto rounded up our very productive meeting.

Thank you to the i3S team for a great event. We felt very welcome!
